Access to the internet is fast being considered as a human right, with a United Nations report stating that disconnecting people from the internet is against international law under article 19, paragraph three, of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In the light of the so-called Arab Spring, and reports that much of Syria’s internet provision has gone down after unrest in the country, the UN’s statement on internet access could have far-reaching political consequences. But it may also have an effect on the music industry, which has pushed hard for “three-strikes” laws that could result in internet disconnection for repeat-offender filesharers.
