Android has a new music app today: Play by Yahoo Music. Available initially in the US, it lets users play their MP3 collections, but also includes Shazam-style music recognition, which Yahoo says uses ‘proprietary audio fingerprinting technology’. The app also pulls in music news from Yahoo’s website, and has a ‘Smart Shuffle’ feature to learn what users like and play them songs from their collection accordingly. Social features are included too. One thing that appears to be missing is any kind of purchasing or streaming ability for songs that aren’t owned – for now Yahoo doesn’t appear to be linking to the APIs of other services (7digital for purchasing or Rdio for streaming, for instance). Perhaps that will come in future updates.
