Have you seen the Talking Tom Cat apps for iPhone? Two have been released so far, and they’ve racked up more than 65 million downloads, while the developer behind them, Outfit7, has totalled 135 million downloads for its whole range of talking character apps. A recent piece of comScore research found that more than 450,000 people used Talking Tom Cat app in April in the UK alone, to back up those big numbers. Anyway, the cat now has a bigshot Hollywood talent agency in his corner – William Morris Endeavor – as part of a deal struck by Outfit7 to take its characters to TV, film and books. “He’s a character that people want to see in new entertainment mediums and we have been getting the same feedback about the newly launched Talking Ben the Dog,” says CEO Andrej Nabergoj. Outfit7 is thus in a race with Rovio’s Angry Birds to become the first mobile-originated brand of the apps era to cross over to other media in a big way.
