Twitter has announced that its users are now sending 200 million tweets every day, up from 65 million a day one year ago, and two million in January 2009. “For perspective, every day, the world writes the equivalent of a 10 million-page book in Tweets or 8,163 copies of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace,” blogs the company. It has also published a chart of the top ten trending topics in pop culture for the first half of 2011: Rebecca Black tops the list, with other music entries including Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale album (2nd), Nate Dogg (5th), Mumford & Sons (8th), ‘Bieber alert’ (9th) and ‘Queen Gaga’ (10th). There’s some bad news for Twitter though: Business Insider reports that the company is facing a Federal Trade Commission investigation into the way it deals with developers and partners. Twitter has faced criticism over its attempts to steer developers away from making apps that compete directly with its official versions – for example on mobile.
