Anyone casually checking Twitter yesterday would be forgiven for thinking Spotify has launched in the US. It hasn’t. But the streaming music service has put a page up on its website allowing people in the US to sign up for an invite, so they can be first in when it does launch there. Alongside approving quotes from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Demi Moore and publications including the LA Times, Wired, Time and Billboard, there is also confirmation that the US will be getting a free tier for Spotify alongside its premium offering. “Any track, any time, anywhere. And it’s free!” runs the slogan. At times in the last year the free element looked unlikely to cross the Atlantic, but it seems Spotify’s recent restrictions on its free service have made it palatable to US rightsholders.
