Sony has announced that it will produce its last MiniDisc Walkman in September this year, following its decision last year to also end production of cassette Walkman players. According to Japanese news site Nikkei, the MiniDisc Walkman range sold 22 million units between its debut in 1992 and March this year, but the growth of iPod and mobile phones sidelined it years ago in terms of the wider industry. Sony isn’t stopping making actual MiniDiscs (yet), but after September stocks of the Walkman devices will be run down.
