Billboard is claiming that Spotify already has more than one million users in the US, just three weeks after its launch there. That’s based on a single industry executive source, but its not a huge surprise: just before launching, Spotify said it had “hundreds of thousands” of people pre-registered to get accounts in the US (Bulletin, 11-Jul-11), and that was just the ultra-keen early adopters. In fact, Billboard has some separate data suggesting that Spotify could have as many as 2.1 million US users, based on crunching numbers from Facebook analytics firm AppData, which suggests the company has added 500,000 monthly active users of its Facebook integration since the US launch, which works out as 2.1 million total users if the ratio of users-to-Facebook-users follows the European pattern.
