New research from Nielsen claims that the average smartphone owner now has 27 apps installed on their device – up from 22 in December last year. The number varies for different OS’ though: iPhone owners have an average of 40 apps, Android owners have 25, and BlackBerry owners have a mere 14. Across all platforms, games remain the most popular category – 61% of smartphone owners have downloaded one in the last 30 days. Games is followed by Weather (55%), Maps/Search (50%) and Social Networking (49%), with Music coming in fifth with 42%.
