Michael Robertson advises startups against seeking major-label licences


Admittedly, this may not come as a surprise to anyone who hasn’t been marooned on a desert island for the last five years. But MP3tunes boss Michael Robertson told attendees at the SF MusicTech Summit yesterday that they should give label licences the bum’s rush. “The odds of making money with a major record label are pretty close to zero,” he said, according to Digital Music News. “I challenge you to name me a company that has. There just aren’t a lot of examples.” He went on to hammer the point home, saying “I’m reluctant to sign a license that is a death sentence for my company.” Source: Digital Music News
