Microsoft is holding its developer conference this week, and yesterday it saw the unveiling of the company’s attempts to compete with Apple’s iPad and other tablets, through its new Windows 8 operating system. The software will run across tablets and PCs, and there is a strong sense that Microsoft sees tablets as just another form factor for the PC, rather than subscribing to Apple’s view of these as ‘post-PC’ devices. Microsoft has worked with Samsung on a prototype device, with powerful hardware specs and software that looks a lot like the Windows Phone 7 OS, upscaled to a bigger screen. Don’t hold your breath for these devices to go on sale, though: it’s expected to be a year or so before the first Windows 8 tablets are available to consumers.
