Apple has announced that its former CEO Steve Jobs has passed away. “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives,” said a statement from the company’s board of directors. “The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.” New CEO Tim Cook had more to say in an email to Apple employees. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.” Tributes have poured in from the heads of Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Disney, as well as President Obama, who put it gracefully: “There may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.” We don’t need to stress Jobs’ impact on the music industry down the years, and expect more reaction to come from rightsholders and rivals in the hours ahead.
