Augmented reality startup Layar has announced the winners of its Layar Creation Challenge, a competition launched earlier this year to find innovative new AR apps using its technology. The first and second-placed apps both have relevance to music. Winning app AR Posters involves adding augmented reality elements to posters for gigs, cultural events and films, so that people can point their cameraphones at the posters and get links to visit websites, watch trailers, tweet or enter competitions to win tickets and prizes. Meanwhile, second-placed app Buy It! lets people buy digital music, films, games and other items by scanning product packaging: for music this would involve scanning a CD and then finding the cheapest prices to buy it digitally.
