For all the talk about Pandora, Spotify and the rest, they’re not the biggest streaming music services on smartphones. TuneIn Radio, which focuses on streaming radio stations from around the world, had 30 million active users in October. Its piece has more details on the company behind the app: it raised $6 million from VC firm Sequoia Capital in late 2010, and recently appointed games industry executive John Donham as its new CEO, poaching him from Disney.
The app is hugely popular on iOS and Android, but is also available for cars, hi-fis and a host of other connected devices, which has fuelled its growth. “There’s nothing viral about TuneIn. How did it get to millions of people with no viral and no marketing?” Donham tells All Things Digital – the question is what led him to jump ship to run the company. TuneIn Radio was also recently named as the most popular iPhone music app by data company Onavo, which claimed 6.6% of US iPhone owners have it on their devices, ahead of Pandora (5.8%).
