Spotify to announce ‘a new direction’ on 30 November

Spotify has a big announcement planned for the end of this month at a press conference in New York, but the company is staying mum about the details. “In New York on November 30th, we are holding our first press conference to unveil the latest major development from Spotify — and a new direction for the company,” a spokesperson tells All Things Digital. “The press event will be hosted by CEO and Founder Daniel Ek, along with special guests.”

Many rumours about what may be announced seem too small-scale to justify the ‘new direction’ tag – an iPad app, a downloads store for the US version of the service, ticketing, merchandise and/or a commercial version of its API. We can’t help remembering a post on TechCrunch in April this year claiming that Spotify had “negotiated a number of deals with major movie studios to offer users streaming movies as well as music”. At the time, Ek slapped the rumour down – “Soon I’ll be reading that Spotify is launching a space rocket”. Well, maybe we shouldn’t rule that last idea out…
