There has been a lot of buzz around avatar-based social music service Turntable.fm this year, but Digital Music News is looking to puncture the hype with some stats. It has taken analytics from Compete.com, Google Search Trends and Alexa, which all show a sharp spike in visitors/searches in June and July, followed by a rapid decline over the months since then. While Turntable.fm has said that it has one million registered users, it seems it may be currently attracting a rump of between 20,000 and 40,000 of those to actively use the service. While the stats don’t include users of Turntable.fm’s iPhone app, they do raise the question of what the service needs to do to have a long-term (and profitable) future.
