EMI and The Echo Nest are building on their partnership for music app sandboxes with a competition, offering $5,000 to the developer that makes the best app from the initiative. People using the sandboxes from artists including Gorillaz, Pet Shop Boys and Evanescence are being asked to submit an application by 21 January with their idea, with a panel of judges due to pick a winner by the end of the month.

“The Grand Prize winner winner of the OpenEMI App Contest will receive a cash prize of $5,000,” explains The Echo Nest. “What’s more you’re in with a shot at partnering with EMI to help you bring your app to market, including a revenue share deal and with EMI taking on licensing and marketing.” One question is whether $5,000 is a tempting enough prize, given the costs of developing music apps.
