Two of the most prominent US music app developers are coming together, with the announcement that Smule has bought Atlanta-based startup Khush. Smule is best known for apps including Glee Karaoke, Magic Piano, I Am T-Pain and Ocarina, while Khush made the reverse-karaoke LaDiDa app, as well as Songify, which turns people’s speech into songs. The companies claim a combined 30 million app downloads and 350 million songs created by users, with Magic Piano and Ocarina notching up six million downloads each, while Songify has topped five million.

“This is a company that shares a common vision with Smule, believing people have creative potential. We believe we can get to one billion people creating music,” says Smule CEO Jeff Smith. The acquisition follows Smule’s recent $12 million funding round.
