Social location service Foursquare now has 15 million users, having added 10 million of them in the last year. Mashable reports that 50% of the service’s users are in the US, with the other half elsewhere in the world. We’re wondering what Foursquare means by ‘users’ though – is that total downloads of its app, or actual active users using it to check in regularly?

In other news, Foursquare’s former rival Gowalla will be winding down at the end of January, after the company was acquired by Facebook. “As we move forward, we hope some of the inspiration behind Gowalla — a fun and beautiful way to share your journey on the go — will live on at Facebook,” blogs founder Josh Williams. Gowalla launched alongside Foursquare at SXSW in 2009, but didn’t match its growth.
