Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has become the fastest game ever to reach $1 billion in revenues, just 16 days after it was released. That means it’s also the fastest piece of entertainment to reach that milestone, since James Cameron’s Avatar movie took 17 days to top $1 billion. Publisher Activision says 30 million people are playing Modern Warfare 3, with six million of them having registered for the game’s Elite social network, and one million having coughed up an additional $49.99 for an Elite subscription, which gets them all future downloadable content for the game, as well as exclusive benefits and competitions. No wonder Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is cocking a snook at other creative industries. “Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences.”
