D2C-funding startup Kickstarter has been used by an increasing number of artists to fund their recordings, tours and other projects – although it’s also used by filmmakers, authors, inventors and other creatives. The company has published some stats for its site in 2011, revealing that 27,086 projects were launched seeking funding, with 11,836 of them successfully raising it (a hit rate of 43.7%). A shade under $100m was pledged by visitors/fans ($99,344,382 if you want to be specific), with Kickstarter attracting just over 30m visitors. For music specifically, $19.8m was pledged by just over 260,000 backers, with 3,653 successful projects in all. A quick tip too: Nearly 80% of projects launched with a project video in 2011. “As creators have learned, backers love pressing play,” notes Kickstarter.
