A report published in the Injury Prevention medical journal claims that pedestrian serious injuries and deaths caused by walking with headphones have tripled in the last seven years. Yes, iPods kill! Perhaps. The numbers are small: 116 crashes involving headphone-wearing pedestrians between 2004 and 2011, with 81 of them ending in death. Half were hit by trains, while the other half by cars, buses, bikes, trucks or – ouch – tractor trailers. The median age of victims was 21, and 68% of them were male. Oh, but hang on, was it all the fault of the headphones? “Since this is a retrospective case series, neither causation nor correlation can be established between headphone use and pedestrian risk.” Ah.
