After a woeful 2011 for Research In Motion and its BlackBerry devices, co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis are finally walking the plank. Well, sort of: they are stepping back to directorial positions, replaced by a single CEO and president, Thorsten Heins. New blood? Not quite: Heins is stepping up from his previous role as chief operating officer at the company. “What you will see with me is rigour and flawless execution,” he promised in his first public interview in the new job. However, it seems drastic change isn’t on the menu in 2012. “We’ve made a lot of changes in the past 18 months. Not changes, but also evolution. I changed a lot of my management team, in hardware, software… We didn’t stand still in the last 18 months, we did our homework. And I think we will complete our homework soon.”
