Yesterday we reported on Paul Hitchman’s decision to step back from the CEO role at music service provider MSP. Now we know why: he has joined music firm Kobalt to head its new Artist and Label Services devision, which was also unveiled yesterday. Alongside the hire, Kobalt revealed that it has acquired digital distribution and marketing company Artists Without A Label (AWAL), which will remain as a standalone business unit. “Our expansion and launch of Kobalt’s Artist and Label Services division and the acquisition of AWAL is a response to our clients’ needs and to a major shift in where we see the market is heading,” says Kobalt CEO Willard Ahdritz. “This acquisition is a building block in Kobalt’s long-term strategy of creating a new kind of full music service alternative for rights holders including artists and labels.”
