A good counterpart to the Kantar smartphone stats is a new piece of research from Google, which commissioned Ipsos for a survey on how people are using their smartphones. One big finding: a “clear consumer shift to smartphones”, most pronounced in the UK where 45% of the total population now own smartphones. That stat is 38% for the US and France, 23% in Germany and 17% in Japan. Two thirds of US smartphone owners and half of UK smartphone owners are accessing the internet every day from their devices. Google and Ipsos also dug into tablets, finding that 11% of the US population now has a tablet. Google has a free PDF to download with more stats on demographics and ownership of these devices.
