Adele’s latest album ’21’ still isn’t available on Spotify and its rivals, but tracks from the album are finding streaming success elsewhere: YouTube. For the week ending 24 January 2012, three songs from ’21’ take the top three spots in Google’s YouTube 100 music chart: ‘Someone Like You’ is top, followed by ‘Rolling In The Deep’ and ‘Set Fire To The Rain’. The videos have notched up total views on YouTube of, respectively, 106m, 220m and 102m. One response to this stat would be to suggest that this YouTube popularity has been one of the factors in the phenomenal sales of ’21’ both digitally and physically. Another response might be to wonder how the payouts from those YouTube views compare to what she might have been paid for equivalent streams.
