European body Impala is on the warpath again over the proposed sale of EMI’s recorded music division to UMG and its publishing arm to Sony. Impala has made its initial submissions to the Federal Trade Commission and European Commission opposing the plans, and issued a stern statement suggesting that “Neither the USA nor Europe wants to see the music sector become a two-horse race, devoid of competition from any other companies”. It also quotes a report compiled by Emmanuel Legrand for EMO and Eurosonic/Noorderslag which claimed that Universal/EMI and Sony would account for 76% of the top 200 European airplay and download songs.
