New online marketing platform Backplane – of Lady Gaga investment fame (Bulletin, 23-Jan-12) – has announced plans to hold an SXSW Managers Hack event in March, during the SXSW conference. It sounds like it’ll follow the Music Hack Day formula of developers sitting in a room to mash up “apps, platforms, and technologies designed to advance the future of digital music distribution”, although the event is invite-only. The key point is the mention of managers in the title: Scooter Braun, Troy Carter and Jay Brown will act as judges at the event. There are some showbiz-style flourishes too: there’ll be a live webcast presented by former Facebook exec Randi Zuckerberg (yes, relation), and “DJs will jam throughout”. Whether the developers will appreciate the latter remains to be seen. As far as we can tell, the event has no relation to the Music Hack Day initiative.
