We’ve said this before: if mobile apps firm Outfit7 isn’t on your radar, it probably should be. The company makes the Talking Tom Cat app and a range of other ‘Talking Friends’ apps, which all involve virtual animals squeakily repeating words spoken into the microphone, as well as other light game elements. Novelties? Maybe, but novelties that have generated 300m downloads – 100m for Talking Tom Cat alone – with 90m monthly active users across the range. What’s new, though, is a licensing deal to offer virtual football kits in the apps from Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid and other European clubs. “In the same way app networks are becoming the new studio system where beloved characters are born, in-app branding is the new form of strategic product placement,” says CMO Paul Baldwin. The point being this: if Arsenal and Barca, why not Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg or Justin Bieber items?
