In 2008, politicians tried to curry favour with their electorate by revealing what music was on their iPods. In 2012, things have moved on: now it’s all about what’s on their streaming playlists. Well, it is for Barack Obama. The US president tweeted this yesterday: “A little Wilco, a bit of No Doubt–check out what else made it onto the new official #Obama2012 campaign playlist”. Did he choose a home-grown streaming service like Rhapsody, Mog or Rdio? Nope. Obama’s team used Spotify to build and share the playlist, which counts as a major win for the service. The hour-long playlist also features tracks by Arcade Fire, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Raphael Saadiq and, well, Electric Light Orchestra (‘Mr. Blue Sky’, naturally).
