US punk band The Offspring have followed in the footsteps of Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine by releasing a ‘Rock Prodigy’ iOS app to teach fans how to play their music. Developer The Way of H is behind the app, which costs £6.99 on the App Store and teaches people to play along to master tracks of the songs using their guitars, getting a score and feedback from the app as they go. Elements can be slowed down or looped to aid learning, and the app supports Line-in so users can hear their playing as part of the mix itself. It’s like an educational guitar hero that uses a real guitar, basically. Dave Mustaine: Rock Prodigy launched in December 2011 (Bulletin, 15-Dec-11), while The Way of H launched an unbranded version of the app in January 2011 selling in-app tutorials for bands including Boston, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Smashing Pumpkins (Bulletin, 12-Jan-11).
