Spotify boss Daniel Ek turns 29 this year, but he doesn’t want any presents. Instead, he’s set up a donation page on the Charity Water website, and is hoping to raise $29,000 for the clean-water charity.
“It kills me to know that more than a billion people around the world don’t have access to clean water. Lack of clean water and basic sanitation kills 42,000 people every week. That’s more than all forms of violence and wars. What’s worse is that more than 90% are children under the age of 5,” writes Ek on the page.
Ek goes on to say he was introduced to the charity three years ago, and was blown away by its mission to provide clean water to people around the world.
“My birthday wish this year is not for more gifts I don’t need; it’s to give clean and safe drinking water to some of the billion people living without it,” writes Ek.
“So instead of asking for gifts, I’m asking for $29 or more from everyone I know. It’s not going to me, though. All of it is going to build freshwater projects for people in developing countries.”
At the time of writing, he’s past the $13,800 mark from 34 donations, including some beefy four-figure sums from friends and industry colleagues. We wish him the best of luck in hitting the target and raising awareness for the charity.
