Adele’s ’21’ has become the first album to go double-platinum on the US iTunes Store, selling 2m downloads in the year since its original release there. Columbia Records announced the stat on its official Tumblr blog – the Sony subsidiary is the licensing partner for XL Recordings, her label in the UK. The blog post also notes that ’21’ sold 730,000 copies in the US last week alone, thanks to a big sales bump from Adele’s appearance at the Grammy Awards, where she performed and won six gongs. ’21’ is also in its 21st week at the top of Billboard’s US albums chart. Gloriously, this puts her level-pegging for the most weeks in the top spot with MC Hammer’s ‘Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em’. The latter IS on Spotify though…
