One of the big trends at the SXSW Interactive conference last year was location-based group messaging apps – helping people chat to people they knew in the same area. This year, it could be something slightly different: social location apps to introduce people to others in their current vicinity that they don’t already know. Key examples are Glancee and Highlight, with the latter announcing a round of seed funding from Benchmark Capital, SV Angel and CrunchFund. It’s preparing to make a splash at SXSW too. “We want Highlight to make Austin even more fun for you – by surprising you with hidden connections, surfacing information about the people you meet, and helping you remember these people when you bump into them at a random New York coffee shop a year later.” It uses Facebook Likes to match people’s interests, meaning that music is likely to be a big part of its appeal.
