Social location service Foursquare has allowed venues to run ‘Specials’ for some time now – deals and discounts for people who check in there. Think cheaper coffees at Starbucks, for example. Now it’s extending the idea to music concerts. “What’s better than getting to see your favorite bands play live? How about getting exclusive tracks, free merch, and special encores, just for checking in?” asks Foursquare in a blog post. “We’re excited to announce that musicians can now reward their fans with foursquare Specials at concerts.” The first examples will come at SXSW next week: limited-edition signed posters at the Counting Crows gig; free drinks and headphones at The Warner Sound’s showcases; a free download for checking in at Walk The Moon’s shows; and meet and greets with Asher Roth, Neon Trees and others for fans who check in. Specials can be run by any artist with their own Foursquare page.
