Artist Plan B is in the news this week, having delivered a hard-hitting speech on British youth at the TED conference last weekend, and releasing his new video Ill Manors on YouTube, which is based on the London riots. The campaign around the video is interesting, with Plan B publishing a statement on his website explaining the context of the video – “The world, and this country especially, is full of contradictions. I’m just highlighting them, I’m not condoning anything”. Label Atlantic UK has also launched a Pinterest board showing the influences and events that sparked the track, and spent last week running teasers on YouTube as 10-second pre-roll videos. A clever campaign digitally, but also one that does a good job of explaining the context to what’s still a politically-sensitive topic.
