Viacom has announced that it has a two-year licensing deal with UK collecting society Video Performance Limited (VPL) to stream independent music videos on its European websites. The pan-European deal builds on an existing agreement for videos on MTV’s European TV channels, with MTV saying Beggars Group has already signed up for the online deal. “The partnership with VPL is hugely significant as it enables us to provide our fans with a broader mix of music videos across multiple platforms, whilst also compensating the independent record labels and artists,” says MTV’s David Mogendorff. As a result of the deal, Beggars artist SBTRKT’s new video Hold On will get a European premiere across MTV’s sites.
