Analyst firm Gartner has issued its latest numbers on the media tablet market, claiming that 119m of these devices will be sold to people (note: not merely shipped to retailers) in 2012. That’s up 98% on 2011’s 60m sales, the company claims. Gartner expects Apple’s iPad to take a 61.4% market share this year – 73m units – but thinks 37.9m Android tablets will be sold, giving Google’s OS a 31.8% market share. Its report suggests Microsoft will sell 4.9m Windows-powered tablets this year, while RIM will sell 2.6m BlackBerry PlayBooks. Looking forward to 2016, Gartner thinks 369m tablets will be sold that year, with iPad taking a 45.9% market share and Android 37.3%.
