With more than 11m followers, Nicki Minaj was one of the most popular music artists on Twitter. Was? Yes: the star deleted her account on Sunday after a public spat with fans over leaked songs from her new album. “Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f*cking bye,” tweeted Minaj just before closing the account down. As Billboard points out, the account can be reactivated within 30 days, but after that it will be permanently gone. Minaj isn’t the first artist to quit Twitter due to concerns about its nature. Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor removed his account in July 2009 (Bulletin, 22-Jul-09), while John Mayer ditched the service in September 2010 to concentrate on his Tumblr blog instead (Bulletin, 14-Sep-10). Reznor has since returned, but Mayer hasn’t – it remains to be seen which of them Nicki Minaj will emulate.
