In the West, we track the progress of social services and apps like Twitter and Instagram, but in China these have minimal traction compared to homegrown services. We’ve covered microblogging site Sina Weibo before, but another one to be aware of is Weixin. According to PandoDaily it “combines elements of Instagram, Path, Google+, GroupMe, Bump, HeyTell, and Facebook” in one mobile app, and it already has 100m users. It’s the work of Chinese internet giant Tencent, which cooked up the blend of photo-sharing, messaging with strangers, and even streaming music: users of Weixin can stream songs from Tencent’s QQ Music service directly from their timelines. The app is available for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and Symbian.
