Remember those stories about artist Amanda Palmer making lots of money from her Twitter fanbase by selling merchandise? She’s at it again on the D2C front, this time on Kickstarter. Palmer launched a project called ‘The new record, art book and tour’ on the crowdfunding site yesterday, aiming to raise $100k. A day later, she’s already past $220k from nearly 4,500 backers. It’s well worth looking at how Palmer put the project together, with an introductory video and tiered rewards for pledges – ranging from digital downloads of the album for anyone pledging $1 or more, through to $10k to get Palmer and her band to come to a fan’s house, dress them up in “ridiculous-looking clothing” for a photo shoot, and then “we will order thai food and drink you under the table”. In between there are promises of vinyl, customised turntables, launch party invites and more.
