Games publisher Electronic Arts has been fielding outraged tweets by the dozen after an in-app message informed players of its Rock Band for iPhone game that it was shutting down. “Dear Rockers, On May 31, Rock Band will no longer be playable on your device,” explained the message. “Thanks for rocking out with us!” The cheery tone was met with anger, though, since the game – launched in October 2009 – includes an in-app store selling music tracks to play along with for £0.69 each. Cue unrest over players’ collections of purchased tracks being rendered unplayable. By this morning, EA had recanted. “Rock Band for iOS will remain live – the in-app message users received yesterday was sent in error. We apologize for the confusion this caused. We’re working to clarify the issue that caused the error and will share additional information as soon as possible.” How a message as clear as “Rock Band will no longer be playable on your device” can be sent in error remains unexplained.
