It’s the time of year for analyst market forecasts in the mobile industry, with Ovum the latest to publish its predictions. The company expects that in 2017, 1.7bn smartphones will ship globally, with Android taking a 48% share, iPhone taking 27%, Windows Phone 13% and BlackBerry 10%. “Android will dominate the smartphone market over the next five years,” says Ovum’s Adam Leach. “While Apple has defined the smartphone market since it introduced the iPhone in 2007, we’re now seeing a sharp rise in the shipment volumes of Android, signaling its appeal to leading handset manufacturers.”
