Counting Crows are the latest – and perhaps most high-profile (if this was 1994) – band to use BitTorrent for legal marketing purposes. The band have launched a ‘BitTorrent Bundle’ of four new tracks, liner notes and artwork for their Underwater Sunshine album. “It’s a way to connect with anyone anywhere anytime. It’s the cure for Babel. These are our new radio stations,” says singer Adam Duritz. “Nobody’s carrying a boombox on their shoulder waiting for you to tell them what they can listen to anymore. But everyone has an iPod in their pocket and a choice. Everyone. So we’re going to give 150 million people some songs they can fit in their pocket and then let them choose for themselves.” The 150m figure refers to the number of BitTorrent users, naturally.
