The Next Web is reporting that Microsoft, in making the Xbox shoulder a broader entertainment role through the roll out of Windows 8, has effectively killed off the Zune, the company’s attempt to take on the iPod and iTunes. It quotes a Microsoft press release saying, “Whether on your PC, tablet, TV or phone, Xbox will be a gateway to the best in music and video, your favorite games and instant access to your friends.” Cynics might crow that you can’t kill off something that never truly lived in the first place. The company has also revealed that it has sold 67m Xbox 360 consoles since 2005 (generating $56bn in sales) and Xbox Live has 40m members. It has also sold 19m Kinect consoles.
