Developers in 25 US cities are to have an opportunity to use GENI, a “prototype ultra-fast broadband sandbox for developers” to build apps that will take advantage of massively increased internet speeds in areas such as health care, education, manufacturing and security. High-quality uncompressed video, for example, could allow doctors to perform remote diagnostics, while data crunching could help in predicting freak weather events such as hurricanes.
