Two winners are emerging in the smartphone race: Apple and Samsung. The pair accounted for 55% of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2012, and more than 90% of market profits, according to new research from ABI Research. Its report claims Samsung shipped 43m smartphones in Q1 to Apple’s 35m, with a big drop to Nokia (11.9m) and Research In Motion (11.1m). Samsung’s surge is one reason to keep a close eye on its music offering, following its recent acquisition of mSpot.
