Music-sample database WhoSampled has launched a slick iPhone app to help people dig into the sources for their favourite music.

Currently selling for an intro price of £1.99, the app scans users’ music libraries to match tracks with its own database of 150k songs, then shows where samples were taken from. The app also streams songs in full from YouTube, and offers charts and iTunes purchase links.

Missing – for now – are any Shazam-like features to identify a song playing in the real world. Although that’s something that could be added in the future using something like The Echo Nest’s Echoprint API.
