Research In Motion’s plunge into obscurity continues: the BlackBerry-maker announced shocking financials last night: a net loss of $518m on revenues of $2.8bn, as the company sold 7.8m BlackBerry smartphones and 260k BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in its latest quarter. RIM’s comeback strategy rests on its next-generation BlackBerry 10 operating system, yet last night saw an announcement that the first devices using it won’t go on sale until Q1 2013. Oh, and 5,000 more staff are being made redundant. This story looks set to end with RIM being broken up and sold for its enterprise services and hardware patents.
