We’ve been following Lady Gage’s Little Monsters community – powered by startup Backplane – since its announcement early this year (Bulletin, 23-Jan-12). It’s been invite-only so far, but now the site has opened to all, enabling fans to sign in with their Facebook or Twitter IDs, or just their email addresses. It feels like a cross between Pinterest, Tumblr and Facebook: part image-sharing and part social networking. An artist-led community isn’t new – Ning was doing it with the likes of Radiohead and 50 Cent some time ago – but with Gaga’s manager Troy Carter a co-founder of Backplane, the company has grand ambitions.
