Google’s decision to crack down on software that helps people to rip the audio from YouTube videos is having an impact. Several software download sites, including Download.com and Softpedia, have started rejecting applications of this type. One new app, RipTunes, was rejected by Softpedia on the grounds that it “encourages users to download YouTube videos to their computers, which is an infringement of Google’s copyright over those clips”. Google’s copyright? Anyway, rightsholders will welcome the news, but people keen to rip music from YouTube can still type ‘YouTube ripper’ into Google to find what they need.
